MIRA – the advanced engineering, research and test consultancy – has completed a major upgrade of its Vehicle Exhaust Emissions Laboratory (VEEL) at its site in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The refit, which represents £360,000 worth of investment, includes a new state-of-the-art AVL chassis dynamometer which will provide MIRA’s customers with even greater test accuracy and repeatability, as well as the ability to test a wide range of vehicles types.
The 48” single roll two-wheel-drive dynamometer can achieve a maximum test speed of up to 200kph and provides a wide inertia simulation range from 150kg to 5,488kg over a range drive cycles and steady state conditions; hence providing the capability to test motorcycles, passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles. The dynamometer also gives ‘at the wheels’ vehicle performance measurement capability of up to 150kW in continuous mode and 250 kW for short periods (10s). Power measurements can be made during vehicle accelerations under road load forces or at constant speed/load conditions; power measurements can be corrected for ambient conditions according to various standards (e.g. SAE & DIN).
Dr Prabhjot Kaur Powertrain & Emissions Function Leader, said:
“Since the Emissions facility first opened in 1960’s it has played an influential role in emissions testing as the first truly independent emissions test laboratory; helping our customers develop new technologies that have lowered emissions and improved fuel economy. It is imperative that as the demands on our customers change and evolve, so does our offering and this latest investment is testament to that commitment.”
The upgraded emissions laboratory with its new state of the art AVL chassis dynamometer and Horiba emissions systems continues to provide the highest quality service to conduct development and certification test work to meet the increasingly complex demands of worldwide legislation including European and US Federal requirements. The laboratory is accredited by the VCA for Euro V and VI legislation.
