HORIBA MIRA – a global-leader in advanced engineering, research and product testing – has further improved its capabilities in Electromagnetic Compatibility testing, investing in a range of new components to add to its world-class facilities.

As part of the £0.5m investment, HORIBA MIRA has acquired a range of products which support the latest developments in plug-in vehicle technology.

Working with EM Test and its parent company, Ametek, HORIBA MIRA has introduced an enhanced three-phase AC/DC power source, exclusively designed and developed to meet the needs of commercial, military and aerospace EMC testing. Created by EM Test in response to HORIBA MIRA’s requirements, NetWave 90.2 is suited to support the need for a clean reference source for Harmonics and Flicker testing. This addition will enable HORIBA MIRA to provide improved testing across its wide customer base following the introduction of enhanced EMC legislation, which now requires vehicles to be in their charging condition during testing – resulting in the need for high current power sources.

The additional new components – which also includes the NX5 Compact Tester for EFT/Burst and Surge – coupled with existing state-of-the-art test facilities and MIRA’s team of EMC engineering experts reaffirms HORIBA MIRA as a world-leader in all aspects of EMC engineering. The investment also signals a step towards HORIBA MIRA’s growth as a centre of excellence for hybrid and electric vehicle engineering and testing.

Mark Emery, EMC Technical Manager at HORIBA MIRA, said:

“This investment represents the first phase of our growth strategy within EMC to support the test and measurement of electric vehicles and their sub components. These new acquisitions from EM Test will allow HORIBA MIRA to service the EMC needs of cars, buses or trucks at an unparalleled level within the UK and Europe. HORIBA MIRA has worked successfully with EM Test for over 20 years and we look forward to working with them on our future EMC requirements in the coming years.”

Alain Burger, Technical Director at EM Test, added:

“The technical requirements presented to us were a great challenge, but because of our long standing relationship with HORIBA MIRA we were able to work with them in proposing new equipment for tests up to 400 A and 1500 V DC, along with developing the new generation of fully automatic three-phase coupling networks for applications of up to 690 V AC and 1000 V DC at 200 A. This acquisition will allow HORIBA MIRA to offer new services to its customers worldwide, and to continue to be a global leader in EMC testing.”

In addition to the NetWave 90.2 installation, HORIBA MIRA has also upgraded its Heavy Vehicle – Semi Anechoic Test Facility lining, which will meet CISPR 16-1-4 Normalised Site Attenuation requirements.

HORIBA MIRA’s suite of EMC facilities are of the most advanced in the world, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the company’s site in Nuneaton, UK.
