Body Structures Testing We conduct a wide variety of tests for vehicle structural safety and development.
Body Block Testing For UN Regulation ECE R12 and EU Directive 74/297/EC testing to evaluate chest loads from steering wheel contact during a frontal crash.
Component Testing We have extensive experience in component testing in either impact or quasi-static conditions, either to prove compliance to some specification or to obtain data to correlate FEA models.
Rigs are adjustable in terms of impact masses, velocities or accelerations as required. For impact testing we have three rigs available:
- Drop Tower– maximum capacity of 2kJ
- Small Linear Impact Sled– maximum capacity of 24kJ
- Large Linear Impact Sled– maximum capacity of 85kJ
Head Impact Testing Three facilities are used for conducting headform impact testing:
- Headform Pendulum Rig – Tests can be conducted to UN Regulations ECE 17 or 21, European Directives 74/408/EC or 74/60/EC, Federal Standards FMVSS 206 or 201, or any similar specification
- Drop Tower – Used for linear head impact tests on steering wheels. Tests can be conducted to UN Regulation ECE R12, European Directive 74/297/EC, or any similar specification
Seat Belt Anchorage Our seat belt anchorage facility includes a very high specification servo-hydraulic computer-controlled rig.
Twelve rams are suitable for independently and simultaneously testing four seats in line with torso, lap and separate inertia loads. Tests can be conducted to UN Regulation ECE 14, European Directive 76/115/EC, Federal Standard FMVSS 210 or any similar specification.
Seat Back Moment We test seats for UN Regulation ECE R17 regarding backrest and head restraint strength (anti-whiplash). Tests can be conducted to UN Regulation ECE R17, European Directive 74/408/EC, Federal Standard FMVSS 202A or any similar specification.
Side Door Intrusion Testing Quasi-static side door intrusion testing according to Federal Standard FMVSS 214 is available. Our rig can apply loads up to 50kN with 600mm working travel. A selection of loading faces is available to suit different vehicle types and standard fixtures mean test setup is quick and consistent.
Truck Cab Safety HORIBA MIRA offers testing on large goods vehicle cabs for frontal intrusion, rear bulkhead strength (cargo shift) and roof strength. Tests can be conducted according to ECE R29-02, Swedish National Standards and other similar specifications.
Vehicle Torsional Stiffness Measurement We offer measurement of body structure torsional and bending stiffness. Tests can be conducted on any level of build from bare body-in-white to fully trimmed vehicle (with suspension removed).

Low-Speed Bumper Tests We offer pendulum and barrier tests for evaluating low-speed bumper impact performance facility.
Roof Crush Rig Our roof crush rig is designed to conduct tests on both passenger cars and large goods vehicle cabs, according to Federal Standard FMVSS 216. Large goods vehicles are tested with the load distributed across the roof structure; full height cabs can be accommodated on chassis sections.
