Rail Crash Test Site

We have the capability to conduct full-scale rail crash testing at the Long Marston facility near Stratford upon Avon Warwickshire.

Operated by the Rail Alliance, the facility provides the optimum location for conducting structural crash testing to the European TSI and EN15227 scenarios 1 and 2.

With a 5km loop of rail track, 50m straight test length in a large flat but screened area it provides the ideal impact location for high speed photography. Large hangers are also available providing undercover test fixture preparation and mounting, as well as security.

In partnership with the Rail Alliance, we have modified two large aggregate carriers for full rail structural crashworthiness testing to EN15227. Both have rigidised mounting plates for the attachment of either train front end structures or a flat plate representing the 80t freight wagon.

The mounting plates allow for the fitment of load cells between the mounting plate and train structures to record impact forces. The two rolling stock carriages have variable ballasting capability, which is supported onsite with a full rail vehicle weighing facility. All of this allows the test vehicles to accurately simulate the performance of actual rail vehicles.

All testing is managed by experts in rail safety and is supplemented by a comprehensive range of high speed imaging equipment, accelerometers, load cells and potentiometers to mount on the test vehicles or in the front end structures.
