HORIBA MIRA has many years of experience in providing test and engineering support to the rail sector. Drawing on our background knowledge and experience from the automotive sector, combined with a pool of knowledge from within the rail industry, HORIBA MIRA is proud to be able to provide engineering expertise and experience in a growing number of technical disciplines.

Safety Development

A key strength within HORIBA MIRA is the experience developed by our safety experts in the areas of rail accident research and investigation to support development of new standards to improve the safety of occupants.

Utilising CAE and impact simulation test methods, HORIBA MIRA can provide suppliers to the rail sector with cost efficient methods to develop products that are lightweight and perform to the required safety standards. In addition HORIBA MIRA’s vehicle crash test laboratory enables development of front end structures prior to full scale testing which are conducted in partnership with Motorail Logistics at their test site in Long Marston.

In addition to skills within rail safety, HORIBA MIRA is also able to offer test and engineering excellence across several other areas to support the rail sector in developing safer and greener transportation solutions.

    MIRA's fluids engineering provides state-of-the-art capabilities for the aerodynamic development of modern high-speed trains. Our aerodynamics team uses state of the art CFD simulation techniques to optimise exterior locomotive design and inter-car spacing in order to reduce aerodynamic drag and deliver substantial energy and fuel savings.

    MIRA offer rail seating solutions to meet UK, Federal and potential European requirements. We offer services from validation testing of an existing design to complete turnkey solutions. Having the complete array of testing facilities, rail safety expertise, design and computer simulation capabilities means that we are able to design high performing, low weight rail interior solutions. 


  • Rail Crash Test Site

    MIRA has the capability to conduct full scale rail crash testing at the Long Marston facility near Stratford upon Avon Warwickshire. Operated by the Rail Alliance, the facility provides the optimum location for conducting structural crash testing to the European TSI and EN15227 scenarios 1 and 2.

    MIRA has two state of the art climatic wind tunnels (CWTs). These facilities allow our customers to test their products under a wide range of wind speeds while exposed to different global environmental conditions. This enables customers development time-scales to be further compressed, delivering 'right first time' products into markets faster and more cost effectively than their competitors.
